RSI would like to extend a huge congratulations to Dr. Tom Chau who recently was awarded the the highest honour in the province, the Order of Ontario!

Chau has dedicated nearly two decades of his career to creating unique communication tools and technologies for children with complex disabilities. As a biomedical engineer, Chau’s research is grounded in treating communication as a fundamental human right and develops innovations that adapt to a person’s unique abilities and needs.

Other than RSI, Chau holds appointments as a U of T professor in IBBME and as the vice-president of research at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. He leads a world-renowned research group that has published more than 190 journal articles and holds more than a dozen patents. He has also supervised over 250 undergraduate and graduate students.

This accolade falls shortly after receiving the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) award back in mid December of last year. The decoration recognizes Canadians for exceptional deeds that bring honour to the country.

As for the Order of Ontario, Dr. Chau will officially be bestowed the honour from The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario during an investiture ceremony at Queen’s Park on February 27, 2018.
